VANCOUVER, 19 December 2022 – The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver organized a Self-Defense Session on 07 December 2022 at the Consulate’s premises, in support of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) and as part of its Gender and Development program.

The Self-Defense Workshop incorporated some practical techniques to protect themselves, to disengage and evade a physical assault as well as how to de-escalate threats and assert their boundaries.

The session was conducted by Guru Jess Inocalla, a practitioner of Filipino martial arts. He is a Guru of Arnis Maharlika and has been training and teaching for over twenty years.  Guru Jess has trained under his father, Datu Shishir Inocalla, in hand to hand, stick, knife, and holistic body arts.

The 18-Day Campaign to End VAW, is observed annually as mandated by Proclamation 1172 s. 2006. This year’s theme, “UNiTEd for a VAW-Free Philippines”, aims to highlight the powerful impact of combining individual efforts towards a collaborative and united thrust towards a VAW-free Philippines.
