CALGARY 01 June 2023 – The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Calgary and the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA) recently held a Gap Analysis Workshop that identified issues and challenges faced by the Filipino community in Calgary and nearby areas on 31 May 2023.

A total of 22 leaders from various Filipino community organizations in Calgary and Airdrie participated in the workshop that was held on 27 May 2023 at CIWA’s office.

The workshop discussed the challenges faced by the Filipino community related to their settlement and integration in Canada, the social services available to them, and the “gap” in the resources and delivery of these social services. Suggestions were made on how to enhance the support and social services for the Filipino community.

The discussion revolved around four themes, namely:  a) mental and physical health; b) family relationships; c) education and career; and d) resources and support.

“This workshop and joint activity with CIWA is part of the PCG’s efforts to promote and protect the welfare and interests of overseas Filipinos as well as advocate for Gender and Development program within our community” Consul General Zaldy Patron said at the beginning of the workshop.

With an estimated 216,000 Filipino nationals and Canadians of Filipino descent, Alberta hosts the second largest Filipino community in Canada, next only to Ontario.

To promote and protect the interests of the Filipinos in the province, Consul General Patron said the PCG had partnered with various non-profit organizations providing a menu of social services for the Filipinos. END
