PH Embassy in Beijing Highlights Filipino Art at ASEAN Ladies’ Event

BEIJING, 27 July 2023 –– The Philippine Embassy in Beijing organized an event promoting Philippine contemporary art on 19 July 2023 at its chancery in Beijing. Mme. Ana Elena Segovia FlorCruz, spouse of Philippine Ambassador to China Jaime FlorCruz, hosted the activity attended by over 70 guests from the ASEAN Ladies’ Circle (ALC), which is an organization of women diplomats and female spouses of personnel of ASEAN Embassies in Beijing. The Philippine Embassy featured Filipino visual artist Mr. Kristine Lim, who graced the event and gave a talk about the story and inspiration behind her “Kuwento ng Alon (As Told by the Waves)” Exhibit.

In her welcome remarks, Mme. Segovia FlorCruz highlighted Philippine art’s role in the creation of the country’s identity and its evolution in terms of technique and purpose. She acknowledged the work of Filipino contemporary artists like Ms. Lim in continuing to express and create with utmost excellence and said that the Embassy joins efforts in fostering a deeper appreciation for them globally. “Our wish is for this event to become part of meaningful conversations about Philippine art and its enduring significance in conveying our story as a people and as a country,” Mme. Segovia FlorCruz added.

Ms. Lim handed over her featured masterpiece “Rooted” to Mme. Segovia FlorCruz as a token of gratitude. The artwork is now part of the Embassy’s Filipiniana collection.

Afterwards, Mme. Segovia FlorCruz hosted a Filipino merienda-themed reception for the heads of ASEAN Ladies’ delegations, Ms. Lim and the rest of the guests. They partook of pancit palabok, chicken sisig, okoy, kakain, maíz con hielo and other delicacies while taking turns in appreciating seven (7) of Ms. Lim’s artworks on display during the activity.

Kristine Lim is an acclaimed multimedia artist from the Philippines. She is currently on a multi-city international tour promoting the said “Kuwento ng Alon (As Told by the Waves)” Exhibit, which is composed of original works inspired by the music of Filipino songwriter and record producer Jonathan Manalo.
