CHONGQING 27 March 2024 – As part of the series of activities organized for National Women’s Month, the Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing held a two-day program to foster women’s empowerment and gender inclusivity. The back-to-back events on 23-24 March 2024 featured a lecture on reproductive health and a Chinese movie that explores women’s challenges in finding a lifetime partner.
In her opening remarks, Philippine Consul General to Chongqing Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo recalled the purposes of the National Women’s Month celebration and the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women every year in the Philippines. She cited the significant strides made to attain gender parity in the Philippines on the back of a powerful women’s advocacy that has positioned the Philippines in the top tier of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gap Gender Index 2023. “To my mind, our status as the leading country in Asia in terms of closing gender gaps makes the Philippines a force for good in our region,” she observed. “Beyond the major Gender and Development (GAD) campaigns held annually, we should make it a point to integrate GAD principles and best practices in our lives like a daily prayer,” the Consul General added.
Dr. Tseng Hsien Cho, Associate Medical Director of Raffles Hospital in Chongqing, walked Consulate personnel through the continuum of women’s reproductive health – from menarche to menopause. He addressed queries on gender-specific health concerns and provided professional advice to improve the well-being of Consulate personnel.
The Consulate team was also treated to a screening of the Chinese film Fei Cheng Wu Rao (If You Are the One, 2008) which delved into society’s attitudes toward women, especially in the context of finding a lifetime partner to raise a family. A lively discussion followed in relation to gender equality and nuances of Philippine and Chinese dating cultures.
The twin events constitute Part Two of the Consulate’s three-part celebration of National Women’s Month in Chongqing.
