CHONGQING 03 April 2024 – Filipino women married to Chinese men were the center of attention as the Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing concluded its National Women’s Month (NWM) celebration with a lecture on Chinese family law and culture on 31 March 2024. The third of a three-part NWM series, the event at the Consulate’s community hall in Chongqing shone a light on Chinese family law and family culture in an effort to ease marital tensions common to cross-cultural marriages.
Attended by Filipinos in Southwest China, the hybrid forum featured Atty. Guo Wenran of the Chongqing Lida Law Office who discussed the rights and obligations of spouses, divorce proceedings, and child custody, among other relevant provisions of Chinese family law. She also fielded questions from her on-site and online audience including Filipino men engaged to Chinese women.
The Consulate General’s own local staff, Ms. Vivian Wang and Mr. Timothy Wong, shared personal knowledge of Chinese family dynamics while offering practical advice to address adjustment challenges experienced by Filipino spouses of Chinese citizens.
Alongside the lecture, Philippine Consul General to Chongqing Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo delivered her regular Ulat sa Bayan while Vice Consul Adrian G. Miras presented consular updates as part of the Consulate General’s quarterly Filipino Community Fellowship.
The Consulate General also took the occasion of the townhall to launch the Bagong Pilipinas campaign with a call to support the country’s economic and social transformation based on values of discipline, continuous learning, integrity, honesty, compassion, diligence, resilience and bayanihan, among other moral foundations.
“We appreciate the hearty response of the Filipino communities in Chongqing, Yunnan and Sichuan to our special townhall today which reaffirms the commitment of the Philippine Consulate General to empower Filipino nationals with important information on the rights and protections available to them under domestic laws. We wish them the very best as they raise families with their Chinese spouse and pray for a harmonious and productive family life,” Consul General Flerida Ann Camille P. Mayo said.
