Members of the Filipino Community, the CABA Police officials and Embassy personnel gather outside the Philippine Embassy in Buenos Aires
BUENOS AIRES 16 December 2024 — On 30 November 2024, members of the Filipino community in Argentina gathered at the Philippine Embassy in Buenos Aires to attend a seminar organized by the Embassy and the Gender Policies Division of the City of Buenos Aires (CABA) Police on understanding, preventing and addressing gender-based violence in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The seminar, in line with the Philippines’ annual 18-day campaign to end Violence Against Women (VAW), aims to address the practical needs of Filipino women and children in Argentina, majority of whom reside in Buenos Aires, to have access to critical information and resources in case they encounter gender-based violence.
Ambassador Grace T. Cruz-Fabella in her remarks emphasized that violence against women is a health and human rights issue that requires public intervention and a global commitment to end it.
Resource persons Florencia Ailen Ramirez, a licensed psychologist, and Dr. Maria de Lourdes Pinto, a lawyer, gave a comprehensive lecture on the types, modalities, and cycle of gender-based violence, the laws in place to protect women and children, and how to report and seek assistance from the CABA police for incidents of violence against women and children.
The head of the Gender Policies Division, Comisario Andrea Freire and Comisario Miriam Berle, the Head of the Department of Assistance to Victims of Family and Gender Violence, expressed their appreciation for the Embassy’s initiative and interest in working together for future projects for the benefit of the Filipino community in Buenos Aires.
In addition to the seminar, the Philippine Embassy launched a social media campaign to raise awareness of Republic Act no. 9262 (the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act), which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. END
