AUTHENTICATION
21 November 2013 – High school and elementary students from Nile Academy, a private educational institution located in Toronto with strong ties to the Turkish community paid a call to the Philippine Consulate General on November 20 to convey their sympathies to those gravely affected by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) that recently ravaged the Visayas.
Accompanied by Mr. Mehmet Gul, Outreach Director of the Turkish Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Toronto and some faculty members, the students also symbolically handed over an envelope containing monetary assistance that they themselves raised through a two-day bake sale held specifically for the typhoon’s victims. Several students of Nile Academy even contributed their lunch money to the fund, according to the school’s representatives.
Consul General Junever M. Mahilum-West, together with Vice Consul Bolivar L. Bao, was on hand to receive the guests, and expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Nile Academy pupils for their invaluable generosity on behalf of the government and people of the Philippines.
The Nile Academy’s donation will be fittingly coursed through UNICEF to avail of the Canadian government’s offer of matching dollar for dollar the funds raised in Canada, effectively doubling the amount of aid that will be sent to the Philippines. END
