25 August 2015 – The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver held a consular reception and painting exhibition on July 13 to celebrate the 11^th Anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence at the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel.

Philippine Consul General Neil Frank R. Ferrer, in his remarks, highlighted the importance of this year’s theme, “Tagumpay sa Pagbabagong Nasimulan, Abot Kamay na ng Bayan”, by sharing significant developments in the Philippines, particularly in the areas of good governance and the battle against corruption, which in turn has translated into positive economic gains and a favorable investment climate for the country. 

Consul General Ferrer noted the robust and dynamic relations between the Philippines  and Canada by sharing the successful state visit of President Benigno S. Aquino III to Canada last May, confirming the closer collaboration of both countries in a wide range of issues such as trade and investment, development cooperation and labor relations. He also expressed gratitude to the Government of Canada, and British Columbia as represented by the Hon. Ms. Wai Young and the Hon. Mr. Richard Lee, respectively, for the warm welcome and hospitality the government has accorded to President Aquino during the latter’s visit, and the unwavering solidarity and support, particularly in humanitarian assistance, Canada has provided to the Philippines over the years.

The Consulate General’s celebration of Philippine Independence Day also coincided with the visit to Vancouver of Mr. Manuel Baldemor, a renowned Filipino artist, painter and sculptor, whose works were on exhibit across Canada. 

An exhibition entitled, “Sulyap sa Pamana ng Inang Bayan,” (A Glance at Traditions of Motherland) was simultaneously held at the Coast Coal Harbour Hotel on July 13 and the lobby of the Richmond City Hall from July 13 to 17. The exhibition showcased 56 artworks of Mr. Baldemor, including four scroll paintings he created while in Vancouver. 

A canvas painting (48”x72”) of the same title was also unveiled during the consular reception and was donated by Mr. Baldemor to Post. The said painting was a result of an interaction painting session held at the Consulate General premises on July 12. The session was led by Mr. Baldemor who was joined by nine British Columbia-based Filipino-Canadian artists.

A mini fashion show featuring the indigenous fabrics and textiles from Mindanao concluded the reception. This segment showcased the creations of talented Filipino designers using Philippine indigenous materials such as hand-woven Mindanao silk from silkworm cocoon, raffia from palm leaves, and piña from pineapple.

The consular reception was attended by over 200 guests, including esteemed members of the consular corps, distinguished businessmen and academics, members of the Filipino community in British Columbia and Alberta, and the media. END
