MEXICO PAINTING

03 November 2015 - The Philippine Embassy, in cooperation with the Guillermo Spratling Museum in Taxco, State of Guerrero, inaugurated the painting exhibit of world-renowned Filipino painter Manuel D. Baldemor on October 16 at the said museum. Consul Angelo Amonoy and Cultural Officer Rosabelle Q. Toledo represented the Embassy at the inauguration ceremony.

The exhibit entitled “Taxco En La Ruta Del Galleon” will run from October 16 to November 13 and is being held in commemoration of the 450th Anniversary of the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade (Return Voyage). The exhibit features around 50 pieces of medium- and large-sized paintings by Mr. Baldemor, depicting sites in Taxco and similarities in Mexico-Philippines culture.

Mr. Manuel Baldemor said in his message that his paintings and drawings mirror the life, customs and traditions of both countries and the Galleon. He also cited the sister-city relations between Taxco and Baguio city established in November 2003.

Consul Amonoy recognized the artist´s work and said that Taxco has always been a part in the history of economic and cultural exchange during the Galleon era because of the silver coins of Taxco which were used in the trading of goods at that time.

In his message, Mayor Flores reaffirmed the ties between Mexico and the Philippines and noted that the arts strengthened and promoted closer ties between the two countries.

He acknowledged the strong historical and cultural links between Mexico and the Philippines for 450 years and expressed his desire to promote Mexico-Philippine culture.

The mayor also acknowledged the painting workshop conducted by Mr. Baldemor for the students of Juan Ruiz de Alarcon in Taxco earlier in the day, where the students worked on the sketches depicting the various cultural aspects of Philippine-Mexican relations. He said that the art workshop allowed the children to appreciate art and show their artistic talents.  Certificates of participation were awarded to the students and their artworks were displayed alongside the paintings of Mr. Baldemor.

Mayor Flores and Mr. Baldemor led the guests inside the museum to view the paintings.  The event was well attended and guests admired and appreciated the paintings on display.  END
