19 June 2017 PORT MORESBY — Philippine Ambassador Bienvenido V. Tejano presented his credentials to Governor General Bob Dadae of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea on June 15 at the Papua New Guinea Government House.

Governor-General Dadae affirmed the strong ties between Papua New Guinea and the Philippines and expressed hope to further deepen and expand both countries’ cooperation in the areas of fisheries, agriculture, trade, education, health, and tourism. The Governor-General also recognized the importance of engagements between Papua New Guinea and the Philippines in regional and multilateral fora such as the Pacific Islands Forum, Coral Triangle Initiative, Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, ASEAN Regional Forum, and the United Nations.

Ambassador Tejano highlighted the growing people-to-people linkages between the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, pointing out that more than 30,000 Filipinos consider Papua New Guinea their second home. He also noted the increase in number and frequency of air services between the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, which demonstrates a greater demand for connectivity between the two countries.

In further discussions, Governor-General Dadae lauded the Filipinos for being skilled and helpful and added that Filipino teachers and workers are welcome in Papua New Guinea. Ambassador Tejano thanked the Papua New Guinea Government for its continued hospitality to the many Filipinos doing business, residing, and working in Papua New Guinea, the assistance provided to the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, its continued support to Philippine candidatures in the United Nations and other international bodies, and its participation in events, meetings, and conferences hosted by Manila.

The meeting ended with both Governor-General Dadae and Ambassador Tejano agreeing to meet again in the coming months to further discuss areas of cooperation between the Philippines and Papua New Guinea.
