03 November 2017 LISBON – Dr. Stephanie Marie R. Coo, Assistant Professor of the Department of History at the Ateneo de Manila University delivered a lecture entitled “Philippine Women’s Clothing: Problematizing Class, Appearances and Colonialism” at Museu do Oriente in Lisbon on October 27.
Dr. Coo’s lecture is based on her doctoral dissertation at the Université Nice Sophia Antipolis in Nice France which focused on the clothing culture of Philippine colonial society in the 19th century.
She enlightened the audience by presenting the unique relationship of clothing and appearance with class, culture and race in light of the cultural, economic and social changes that occurred between 1820 and 1896 in the Philippines under Spanish colonization.
Dr. Coo further explained that her research study led her to develop a theoretical sartorial framework outlining the importance of Chinese, European and Philippine sartorial cultures and the elite and common social classes evident during this time period.
The lecture was attended by guests from the Diplomatic community, Portuguese government and the academe. END
