09 September 2016 – Philippine non-resident Ambassador to Mozambique Joseph Gerard B. Angeles called on the Governor of Nampula Province, Mr. Victor Borges, on  September 02.

Governor Borges warmly welcomed and assured Ambassador Angeles that the Filipinos residing in Nampula Province are doing very well. With most of the Filipinos in Nampula working as teachers, the Governor conveyed his appreciation of the contributions of the Filipino community in society-building in Nampula.

The Governor also expressed his interest in fostering bilateral cooperation in fisheries and agriculture, having been impressed by the Philippines’ expertise in tilapia farming and rice production. Governor Borges noted that the country is host to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and he said that it would be helpful for Nampula Province if it could have a bilateral cooperation with the IRRI. Ambassador Angeles welcomed Governor Borges’ interest and encouraged the latter to initiate an invitation for a government-to-government meeting to jumpstart possible collaborations.

Following the meeting with Governor Borges, Ambassador Angeles attended a short press conference to give a briefing on the Philippines’ perspective on Philippine-Mozambique bilateral relations. Ambassador Angeles remarked on the strong bilateral relations between the two countries and highlighted possible areas of bilateral cooperation, in particular the various opportunities offered in Nampula.

After the courtesy call on Governor Borges, Ambassador Angeles met with the Filipino community in Nampula. The meeting was also an opportunity for the Philippine Embassy consular team to provide consular services and inform the community of developments in the Philippines.

Nampula City is the capital of Nampula Province in northern Mozambique and is the third-largest city in Mozambique, following the country’s capital, Maputo, and the port city of Beira. There are over 150 Filipinos based in the area who are mostly long-term residents working as teachers in international schools. END
